Hughes & Smith’s history with McDonald’s includes hundreds of restaurant builds and remodels in the Washington metropolitan region. During the 1990s, the company helped deliver more than 70 McDonald’s Express units over a two-year period.
Some of the most challenging projects involved existing structures. At 2481–83 18th Street NW in Washington, the team supported the historic exterior and roof while rebuilding the interior as a three-story restaurant.
At 5311 Duke Street in Alexandria, the work included supporting retained exterior walls and part of the roof while replacing interior structural elements, addressing unsuitable soils, and constructing a new slab and steel-framed interior.
